Do you need Additional Mathematics for polytechnic?
Additional Mathematics can be useful for a student’s plans, but it is not a universal polytechnic admission requirement. Start with the exact diploma, intake year and subject conditions.

Separate three different questions
- Is the subject required? Read the diploma’s minimum entry requirements. A specific Additional Mathematics condition is different from a condition accepting Mathematics or Additional Mathematics.
- Can it count in the aggregate? A subject may be allowed in ELR2B2 without being compulsory for the course.
- Does it suit the student? Interest, readiness, workload and other potential routes matter even when a subject is optional for admission.
The MOE polytechnic admission criteria distinguish the aggregate from individual course requirements. A bonus-point deduction does not repair a subject grade that fails a minimum requirement.
Read “Mathematics or Additional Mathematics” carefully
In the published O-Level aggregate lists, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics are accepted alternatives for the Mathematics-related slot in ELR2B2-B, C and D. That does not mean every subject combination is valid or that the course has no further conditions. The other relevant-subject group differs by aggregate type. Check MOE’s complete 2026 subject lists.
If a student takes both Mathematics subjects, count each actual examined result at most once and follow the aggregate’s slot rules. Do not count the same Mathematics result twice because it could fit more than one slot. Our free A/B/C/D calculator shows which results it selects.
Compare actual course rows, not course names
Our reviewed 2026 references for NP Pharmaceutical Science (N73) and TP Computer Engineering (T13) include a Mathematics requirement and accepted subject groups. Read the full row and its official source before treating either as an option. “Engineering” in a title is not evidence, by itself, that Additional Mathematics is compulsory.
Use the public course-reference collection to compare conditions side by side with the source. It is a selected collection, not the complete diploma catalogue. Where a course or intake is not covered, use MOE CourseFinder and the polytechnic’s admissions instructions.
A practical subject-choice conversation
Fictional example: two possible routes
A student is considering both a science-related diploma and JC. Instead of deciding that “poly does not need A Math”, the family records three target diplomas, checks each official requirement, and asks potential JCs about the subjects needed for the intended JC combination. They also discuss whether taking Additional Mathematics would leave enough time for English, humanities and their other subjects.
This is a decision process, not a recommendation that every student should take or drop the subject. Ask the school’s subject teachers and ECG counsellor about the student’s preparation and available combinations.
For 2028/2029, recheck the level as well as the name
The published polytechnic framework from 2028 uses G3 results for English, two relevant subjects and one best subject, plus a G2-equivalent second best subject. Course-specific future requirements still need checking; a 2026 O-Level row is not a verified 2029 requirement. Read the admissions-year guide and MOE’s future polytechnic framework.
Before finalising subjects, write down the intended intake, each target course, required subject level and grade, and the source date. Revisit that list when official information for the intake is published.
