PSLE AL scores and secondary school choices: a parent’s guide

A PSLE score helps you start a school shortlist. Understanding the reference year, Posting Group and choice order helps you use that score sensibly.

Read the score range before making a shortlist

Lower total PSLE AL scores indicate better performance. In MOE SchoolFinder, a school’s published range describes the first and last students posted in the previous year, for the stated Posting Group. The cut-off point (COP) is the last posted student’s score. MOE explains historical score ranges.

Check the year and whether the range is for an affiliated or non-affiliated applicant. A figure from one group or category is not interchangeable with another. Actual outcomes change with applicants’ results, preferences and available places.

A fictional example: AL 15 and a historical range of 10–16

AL 15 sits inside this past range. That makes the school worth researching; it does not establish a probability of admission. AL 16 matching the past COP is not a guaranteed place either. AL 9 being better than the first posted score does not, by itself, make an applicant ineligible—the range is not a permitted-score band.

Use your child’s eligible Posting Group

Posting Groups guide school posting and the initial level of most subjects. They do not lock every subject to one level for the whole of secondary school. Full Subject-Based Banding allows subjects at different levels according to the student’s strengths and learning needs.

Where two groups are available, discuss which learning pace suits your child. The chosen group applies to all school choices in the submission; groups cannot be mixed. Check MOE’s Posting Group guidance and your child’s official eligibility information.

Understand why choice order matters

S1 Posting considers results, school choices and vacancies. If students with the same score compete for the last available places, the tie-breakers are citizenship status, then choice order, then computerised balloting. Citizenship priority is Singapore Citizen, Permanent Resident, then International Student.

Putting a school first does not override another applicant’s better PSLE score. Choice order matters when the preceding criteria tie. Affiliation and SAP considerations also need a separate check. Read MOE’s posting examples and additional conditions.

Build six choices with your child

  1. Start with fit. Discuss travel time, programmes, CCAs, school environment and the support your child needs.
  2. Compare like with like. Record each school’s reference year, Posting Group and relevant admission category.
  3. Include a range. MOE strongly encourages at least two or three choices where the child’s score is better than the school’s previous COP.
  4. Rank genuine preferences. Use all six options where possible. Check affiliation rules before deciding the first choice.
  5. Submit through the official process. Confirm dates and instructions on MOE’s S1 Posting page; saving a shortlist here is not an application.

Use MOE’s shortlisting checklist, SchoolFinder and the current S1 Posting timeline to complete your checks.

What our free checker can help with

The PSLE AL checker gives up to three historical school-range examples without signup. It helps begin a conversation; it does not check every SAP, affiliation, DSA or posting condition, or generate your final six choices. Confirm each candidate school against official information.

For a child already choosing secondary subjects, read the Combined Science options guide. For later planning, the free ELR2B2 A/B/C/D calculator illustrates a different, post-secondary calculation—it does not convert a PSLE score into a polytechnic admission score.
