How to choose a secondary school subject combination

Begin with your child’s strengths and a few possible next steps. Then check what the school offers and which subjects those routes actually require.

Record the subject level as well as the subject name

Under Full Subject-Based Banding, a student can take subjects at different levels according to strengths and learning needs. A Posting Group guides initial levels; it is not a fixed label for every subject throughout secondary school. MOE explains Posting Groups and subject-level flexibility.

When comparing a possible combination, write “Mathematics at G3” or “Science at G2”, rather than just the subject name. Later admission rules can require particular levels in particular aggregate slots. Your child’s school should confirm what changes are available and when.

Choose a few routes to investigate

You do not need a final career decision in Secondary 2. Choose a small set of possibilities to test: for example, a science-related diploma, a business diploma and a possible JC subject combination. Read their official requirements instead of assuming that a broad course title tells you which science is required.

Our public course references show selected reviewed 2026 rows. Keep that reference year visible. Use MOE CourseFinder and the institution’s current information for a route not covered by the collection.

Check the school’s actual combinations

  1. Obtain the school’s current subject-choice booklet and selection conditions.
  2. Identify compulsory subjects, option blocks and combinations that cannot be taken together.
  3. Check any school-specific grade prerequisites and subject-level arrangements.
  4. Ask subject teachers about readiness, workload and assessment demands.
  5. Record a preferred combination and an acceptable alternative.

A combination that looks possible in a general planner may not be offered by the school. School presets and examples should be checked against the current booklet before relying on them.

Resolve science and Mathematics questions separately

Combined Science contributes one examined result even though it covers two sciences. Pure and combined sciences have different subject names in admissions lists; check the exact accepted subject group. Read the Chem/Bio versus Chem/Physics guide for worked course comparisons.

Additional Mathematics is another decision. Being useful preparation, being allowed in an aggregate and being compulsory for a particular course are different things. Read whether you need Additional Mathematics for polytechnic, then ask about the intended JC subject combination if that route is also being considered.

Test a plan without treating it as a prediction

Fictional example: choosing between two combinations

A family compares the same core subjects with either Chem/Bio or Chem/Physics. They first check the school’s option rules, then compare three target diplomas’ subject requirements. Finally, they discuss interest and workload. They do not choose the pair simply because one produces a larger course count in a planner.

The free ELR2B2 A/B/C/D calculator can illustrate how entered grades fill aggregate slots. It does not enforce every school’s subject blocks or verify unpublished future diploma requirements. Saved subject-combination scenarios are part of the optional paid planning tools.

Keep your intake year visible

Students taking SEC in 2027 normally plan for a 2028 intake; those taking SEC in 2028 normally plan for 2029. The published PSE framework starts from 2028, but course-specific requirements and application details must be checked for the actual intake. Read the 2028/2029 admissions guide and MOE’s PSE information.

Keep a short record of the source, year and unanswered questions for each possible route. Revisit it with the school when new official information is released.
