Combined Science Chem/Bio vs Chem/Physics: polytechnic options
Neither combination automatically gives you more polytechnic options. Start with the exact course requirements, your other subjects and the year you intend to enter.

Both combinations can satisfy the same science requirement
In the three official course examples below, Science (Chemistry, Biology) and Science (Physics, Chemistry) are both accepted at the same minimum grade. A biomedical course title alone does not mean Biology is compulsory for admission.
Whether a subject is useful preparation is a separate question from whether it satisfies an entry requirement. Consider your interests and strengths alongside the requirements of courses you might want.
Three course examples to check
Published O-Level minimum academic requirements, checked on 11 October 2026. Other accepted subjects and additional conditions appear on the linked institution pages.
| Course | English | Maths / Additional Maths | Either science pair |
|---|---|---|---|
| SP Biomedical Science (S98) | D7 | C6 | C6 |
| SP Mechanical Engineering (S91) | D7 | C6 | C6 |
| NYP Nursing (C97) | D7 | C6 | C6 |
These are minimum subject grades, not historical cut-offs. For the current O-Level JAE framework, the general net ELR2B2 ceiling is 26; Nursing uses 28. Competition for places can require a substantially better score. Check MOE’s JAE requirements and each course’s additional conditions.
Recognise the same subject under different names
“Chem/Physics”, “Physics/Chemistry” and “Science (Physics, Chemistry)” may refer to the same Combined Science pair. Likewise, “Chem/Bio” is commonly used for Science (Chemistry, Biology). Match both components rather than relying on their order or punctuation.
Combined Science is one subject result. It is not two separate pure-science qualifications. If a course specifically requires a named pure-science subject, check its exact wording rather than treating a component of Combined Science as an automatic substitute.
If a planner suddenly shows very different course counts after swapping these two pairs, inspect the subject matching, course filters and intake year. The three examples above should not disappear solely because one accepted pair replaced the other at the same grade.
Keep the aggregate and course requirements separate
A course specifies an ELR2B2 type and individual minimum entry requirements. Passing one check does not mean passing the other. A good total cannot compensate for a required subject grade that is below the minimum.
For example, the listed SP Mechanical Engineering requirement includes Mathematics or Additional Mathematics at C6 or better. Meeting the science requirement alone is insufficient. See how the five-subject aggregate is calculated.
Planning for 2028 or 2029?
MOE has announced a revised polytechnic framework from the 2028 intake: four subjects at G3 and one at G2-equivalent, with a general net aggregate ceiling of 22 and 24 for Nursing. That does not make every 2026 course requirement a confirmed requirement for a later intake.
MOE says information on courses offered from 2028 is expected in mid-2027. For 2029 planning, use the announced framework as guidance and recheck the course-specific information when it is published. Do not compare a newly mapped score directly with an old cut-off as if both used the same rules. Read MOE’s published framework.
A practical subject-choice checklist
- Pick a few courses you are interested in, rather than starting with the largest possible course count.
- Check the admission year, aggregate type, required subjects and any additional conditions on official pages.
- Compare subjects you enjoy and can do well in; discuss preparation and available combinations with your school.
- Recheck the shortlist after your next results or when new admission details appear.
