JC or polytechnic: how to compare your next education choices

Choose between actual programmes and learning environments, not a ranking of which route is better. Start with the student’s interests, subject strengths and the options they want to keep open.

Understand what each route is designed to do

Starting points for comparing specific institutions
QuestionJCPolytechnic
QualificationTypically a two-year pre-university route to A-Levels; specified institutions offer IB.A diploma in a selected field.
What to investigateSubject combinations, prerequisites and the assessment demands of the programme.Course modules, practical work, projects, attachments and assessment methods.
Possible next stepsFurther education, subject to the receiving institution’s requirements.Employment or further study, subject to the relevant requirements.

MOE’s overview of post-secondary institutions describes the routes, qualifications and progression possibilities. MI is a separate three-year pre-university option; do not treat it as identical to a two-year JC course.

Compare learning demands without stereotypes

“Academic” versus “hands-on” is too simple a test. A diploma can involve theory, examinations and sustained independent work. A JC programme can include practical and project work. Look at the actual curriculum rather than assuming that one route will be easier.

Ask the student to compare a typical week in two shortlisted programmes: subjects or modules, deadlines, independent study, group tasks and travel. Use open-house materials and course descriptions to replace assumptions with concrete questions.

Check eligibility before comparing historical scores

JC and polytechnic use different aggregates and individual subject conditions. The published framework from 2028 uses gross L1R4 for JC eligibility and a revised ELR2B2 for diploma admission. A number from one route cannot be compared directly with a number from the other. Check JC/MI criteria and polytechnic criteria.

The free calculator calculates ELR2B2 A/B/C/D, not JC L1R4. It includes three fixed diploma examples, not a complete course shortlist. The public diploma references help explain selected course conditions.

Work backwards from possible next steps

If the student is considering a particular university course, check that university’s current prerequisites for both qualification routes. A university may have subject, diploma, grade or additional selection requirements. “Both routes can lead to university” does not mean every programme is accessible through every qualification.

Keep at least one alternative next step on the list. Course interests can change, and a sensible plan should not depend on one predicted admission result.

A discussion sheet for the family

  1. Name two actual JC subject combinations and two actual diploma courses to investigate.
  2. For each, record the intake year, prerequisites and the official source.
  3. Compare curriculum, travel, cost and support needs—not only a past cut-off.
  4. List which future options each route supports and which requirements still need checking.
  5. Discuss the student’s preference with teachers or an ECG counsellor before submitting choices.

For students still choosing secondary subjects, start with the subject-combination guide. For grade calculations, read ELR2B2 explained. Use official application channels to submit choices; this website is a planning service.
